What Is Hypnobirthing?

The Hypnobirthing AustraliaTM Positive Birth program is a comprehensive and multifaceted form of holistic and evidence-based childbirth education that provides you with the knowledge, tools and support required to prepare for and assist you to achieve a positive birth experience.

Fear of the unknown in pregnancy and birth is replaced with empowerment from everything that we do know. By learning and practising evidence-based tools and techniques to apply to both labour and birth, we can go into birth with feelings of confidence and excitement.

The ‘Hypno’ part of hypnobirthing does not mean that you will be hypnotised during your birth. It simply refers to the deep  relaxation techniques that you will learn throughout the course and master during your pregnancy. These deep conditioning techniques help you to access a profound state of self-hypnosis during your labour which is actually a very normal state of being and when harnessed during childbirth contributes to a more comfortable and satisfying experience for the mother.

You will gain knowledge about common procedures, tests and investigations that may be offered in your chosen birth setting whether this is at home in a birth centre or in a hospital setting. You will also be guided to further research to help you to develop your own unique preferences for labour and birth. Knowledge is power and this knowledge will help you to make informed decisions calmly and confidently, in the lead up to and during your labour no matter what course your pregnancy and birthing journey takes.

  • When is the best time to start the course?
Starting the course when you are anywhere between 20-34weeks is ideal to allow adequate time for couples to integrate and process the information, and practice the tools and techniques. However we are happy for you to start when you are ready to.
  • Why should I do Hypnobirthing Australia classes instead of Hospital antenatal classes?
Hypnobirthing Australia is an evidence-based independent Childbirth Education course, whereas most hospital antenatal classes are governed by hospital policy and procedures. Hypnobirthing Australia Classes will equip you and your birth partner with all the tools you’ll need for a positive labour and birth including self- hypnosis, breathing techniques (for relaxation, surges and bearing down), acupressure (for pain relief, natural induction and to enhance surges), massage and positions for active labour and birth. In an Australian study by Dr Kate Levett (Jul 2016), it showed that independent childbirth education including relaxation, breathing, meditation, massage and acupressure more than halved epidural rates and almost halved caesarean rates.
  • What will my birth partner get out of the Hypnobirthing Australia course?
Your birth partner will learn how to support you by: - Preparing the room (no matter where you birth) so it’s conducive to a calm and relaxed labour and birth. - Using Acupressure techniques to support you in labour. - Using light touch massage to support you in labour - Playing and reading the self-hypnosis scripts that will help you release your fears, rehearse for birth and relax - Using affirmations and words of encouragement. - Asking the right questions of your healthcare providers to enable you to make informed decisions, should the need arise in the lead up to and during your birth - Using the tips on the Cheat Sheet through every stage of labour and birth - Physically supporting you in active labour positions or fetching props to ensure you’re comfortable and relaxed.
  • What if I dont have a partner - Can I bring someone else?
We do recommend that you do the course with your chosen support person. A support person can be anyone of your choosing. This person doesn’t have to be your partner, it may be your mum, sister, doula, best friend, or Aunty. Whoever it is it’s really important that they understand your preferences, how to support you, both emotionally and physically and have the knowledge required to confidently stand by your side cheering you on through labour and birth instead of being fearful and not knowing what to do.
  • Is Hypnobirthing Australia just for natural birth?
No! Hypnobirthing is for anyone birthing a baby. The Hypnobirthing Australia Positive Birth Program is designed to empower couples to have a positive birth experience whatever turn their birthing takes. We also have a Positive Caesarean course for those having a caesarean section. The course arms you with evidence based tools and knowledge so that you can make informed decisions in pregnancy, labour and birth. So you may make the informed and empowered decision to have an epidural, you may be booked for a caesarean, you may be requiring an induction of labour, you have a complex medical history - the Hypnobirthing Australia course is still for you.
  • What are the benefits of Hypnobirthing?
The Hypnobirthing Australia Positive Birth Program is effective for: - Reducing the average length of labour - Reducing or removing the need for medication including epidurals - Reducing the need for intervention including caesarean section dependant on the hospital - Reducing the rate of postnatal depression. - Improving maternal satisfaction rates.
  • Is the Hypnobirthing Australia course beneficial if I've chosen to have a caesarean?
Absolutely! Hypnobirthing Australia prepares you for a positive birth- regardless of how your baby comes into the world. The program helps you and your partner to bond with your baby and each other, to relax during pregnancy, to release fears about birth and equips you and your partner to make educated decisions no matter how your birth unfolds. If you choose to have an epidural or cesarean you can use the tools you learnt on the program to remain calm, relaxed and empowered. Hypnobirthing Australia have pioneered ‘The Positive Caesarean Birth’ course to teach you techniques for relaxation and self-hypnosis to assist in achieving a calm and family-friendly caesarean.
  • What do I wear & bring to class?
Clothes that are stretchy and comfortable. Layering is best in case you get hot or cold. Socks will keep your feet warm in our relaxations. Whilst chairs are available, there will be times where we’ll sit on the floor or practise some positions for labour and birth. Bring a drink bottle, a small cushion or pillow and a birth/exercise ball if you have one (we recommend purchasing as you'll need one to practice at home with)
  • Do you offer private classes?
Yes we do! Please get intouch with us to learn more about how we can suppport you with a private class.
  • What happens if I miss a class?
Classes can be transferred to another scheduled group class if spaces are available. It is important to attend all classes in order to get the maximum knowledge and tools for your birth.
